BCaBA certification: what a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst does, and the route to it
BCaBA® (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst) certification is the BACB's undergraduate-level credential in behavior analysis: you hold at least a bachelor's degree, you deliver behavior-analytic services only under a BCBA's supervision, and you may supervise RBTs. Below is the map: the role, the four steps in, the exam under the 6th-edition outline, and three practice questions to try on this page.
The assistant's seat: what a BCaBA does and where the role stops
Place the credential between two others. An RBT carries out sessions; a BCBA designs the program, evaluates it and answers for it. The assistant works in the middle, and the outline's verbs show where: an assistant is asked to develop and implement or to identify, while the graduate-level outline mostly asks a BCBA to design and evaluate.
Inside the role
Run preference, reinforcer and functional assessments.
Develop and implement behavior-change procedures with the supervising BCBA.
Graph session data and flag when the numbers call for a decision.
Supervise, train and assess RBTs once the BACB's supervision training is done.
Outside the role
Practicing independently, at any point in a career.
Supervising anyone's BCaBA or BCBA fieldwork: those supervisors must be BCBAs.
Working with no supervisor on record: the certification goes inactive, with no practice, billing, or RBT supervision and training until a new one is in place.
The tellThe supervisor on record. Everything an assistant delivers runs through a BCBA; remove that link and the credential stops working until it is restored.
02Who it suits
Who the BCaBA suits
The typical candidate already works in ABA with a bachelor's degree, often as an RBT or behavior technician who wants to shape programs and not only run them. Three profiles fit well:
The bachelor's holder from another field. Psychology, education and unrelated majors all qualify through Pathway 2, which adds behavior-analytic coursework to a degree in any field.
The RBT ready to supervise. You already know session work and have a BCBA willing to supervise your fieldwork; the credential lets you supervise and train RBTs in turn.
The future BCBA. You plan a master's later and want the credential and supervised practice now. The BACB lets you hold one certification at a time, so passing the BCBA ends the BCaBA 180 days later.
Two limits deserve a look before you start. Geography: per the current handbook, the BACB accepts no new BCaBA applications from Ontario, the exam is not delivered in Ontario or Quebec, and testing in Australia ends on 1 January 2027, which makes this a United States and most-of-Canada credential. Scale: BACB certificant data counted 4,931 active BCaBAs as of 1 October 2026. If your aim is to practice on your own, treat it as a waypoint, not the destination.
03Four steps
The path to BCaBA certification in four steps
The order of the steps never changes; the numbers inside them do, on 1 January 2027. This page keeps to the order. The hours, with the date each figure applies from, sit on two pages built for them.
1
Degree and coursework
A bachelor's from an ABAI-accredited program (Pathway 1), or a bachelor's in any field plus behavior-analytic coursework (Pathway 2). Hours and content areas for each rule set: how to qualify.
2
Supervised fieldwork
Practice hours under a qualified BCBA, logged month by month as Supervised or Concentrated fieldwork. Start only with the supervisor, a signed contract and qualifying coursework under way. The monthly arithmetic: fieldwork and supervision hours.
Certified, you still need a BCBA supervisor on record for as long as you practice, and you recertify every 2 years with continuing education. The supervision rules after certification also change in 2027, covered on the supervision page.
The step people underestimate is the second. Fieldwork runs for many months, and your application date, not your start date, decides which rule set you are measured against. If you will still be logging hours in late 2026, plan with the supervision page open.
04The exam
What the exam looks like, in one table
One exam, the same for every applicant whichever rule set admitted them. Under the 6th-edition outline, per the current BCaBA Handbook (updated June 2026), you sit it in person at a Pearson VUE test center or a US military base, never online.

Questions
175: 150 scored and 25 unscored, mixed in and not marked
Time
4 hours, the tutorial and the terms screen included
Where
Pearson VUE test centers and US military bases; no online or at-home testing
Result
Pass or fail at the test center; the cut score comes from a modified Angoff study and no percentage is published
Attempts
Up to 8 inside a 2-year authorization, at least 30 days apart
Two consequences for planning. You get a verdict, not a number: pass or fail on screen at the center, against a cut set by a modified Angoff study, and only a failing report breaks your result down by content area. One outcome figure is published: BACB pass-rate data shows 60% of first-time candidates passed in 2025. Fees, booking, the unscored items and the attempt rules: the exam, from booking to result.
05Nine sections
Nine sections, weighted: what the exam covers
The BCaBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.), in effect since 2025 and formerly called the task list, spreads the 150 scored questions across nine sections and 90 tasks. The spread is uneven: Section G, Behavior-Change Procedures, carries 22 questions, while A and D carry 10 each.
Scored questions per section, Test Content Outline (6th ed.): 150 in all
Item counts from the Test Content Outline (6th ed.); the dashed line is an even split of 16.7 items a section; filled dots mark the sections with a guide on this site.
One trial each from Section G, the heaviest section, Section C on measurement, and Section E, Ethical and Professional Issues. A trial sheet runs above the card, one cell per trial: + for a correct answer, − for an error. Beside it, a cumulative record climbs one step for each correct answer and runs flat on an error. Picking an option locks it and opens the explanation with a note on every option. After the third trial the record shows your result by section.

For teaching mands (requests), the most important arrangement is ensuring motivation for specific items or activities is present. Mands are under the control of motivating operations, so creating or capturing situations where the child wants something provides optimal opportunities to teach requesting behavior.
ACorrect: mands are controlled by motivating operations, so naturalistic teaching creates or captures motivation for items.
BLabeling objects teaches tacts, not mands.
CFree access to items removes the motivation to ask.
DPictures presented without interest lack the motivating operation that mands require.

Event recording is a continuous measurement system that records each occurrence of a behavior during an observation period. This is appropriate for behaviors with a discrete beginning and end that occur at a low to moderate rate.
ADuration recording measures how long each episode lasts, not each instance.
BWhole interval recording scores whether behavior filled each interval; it does not record every instance.
CCorrect: recording each instance throughout the session is event (frequency) recording, a continuous method.
DMomentary time sampling records only at set moments.

Maintaining accurate data representation regardless of pressure is essential to ethical practice. Reporting only objective, accurate data and consulting with the supervising BCBA about the situation upholds professional integrity and ethical standards.
ACorrect: report accurate data and consult the supervising BCBA; misrepresenting outcomes is unethical.
BChanging measurement to make progress look better misrepresents outcomes.
CSpinning results misleads funders and families.
DUnbilled services do not address the pressure to misreport.

Laid out the way a failing BACB score report lists your percentage per content area. A practice percentage is not a pass prediction: the BACB publishes no passing percentage.
None of the three is an exam item: each was written here for one task of the 6th-edition outline, and three trials predict nothing about a result. The full run is 60 trials across all nine sections, weighted like the outline, with an optional paced run at about 82 seconds a question: the handbook's 4 hours for 175 questions.

09Questions
FAQ
01What does a BCaBA do?
An assistant behavior analyst develops and implements behavior-analytic assessments and interventions under a BCBA's supervision: running preference and functional assessments, carrying out procedures, graphing data and flagging when a change is due. Many also supervise and train RBTs. The role section lists what sits inside and outside it.
02What can a BCaBA not do?
Practice independently, or supervise anyone's BCaBA or BCBA fieldwork; those supervisors must be BCBAs. With no supervisor on record, the certification goes inactive: no practice, no billing, and no supervising or training RBTs until a new supervisor is in place, per the BCaBA Handbook.
03Is becoming a BCaBA worth it?
It depends on your degree and your plan. With a bachelor's and a job in ABA, it lets you develop programs and supervise RBTs years before a master's would. It is a smaller credential, with 4,931 active BCaBAs as of 1 October 2026 (BACB certificant data), and it always works under a BCBA. Check whether employers near you use the role before you commit.
04Can a BCaBA supervise an RBT?
Yes. After completing the BACB's supervision training, an assistant may supervise, train and assess RBTs, while staying under a BCBA's supervision. Supervising RBTs also adds supervision continuing education to each recertification cycle.
05Is BCaBA a license?
No. It is a certification from the BACB. Some states license or regulate behavior analysts, and some license assistants too; the handbook tells you to contact the state board before practicing in those states. Check your own state's board for its rules.
06What is the difference between a BCBA and a BCaBA?
Degree level and independence. The BCaBA is bachelor's-level and always practices under a BCBA; the BCBA is master's-level and practices independently, and can supervise fieldwork and BCaBAs. Each has its own outline and exam. Side by side: BCaBA vs BCBA.
