How to become a BCaBA: the route if you apply in 2026, and what changes on 1 January 2027
The BCaBA® (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst) requirements come down to four steps, taken in order: a bachelor's degree, behavior-analytic coursework, fieldwork supervised by a BCBA, and a pass on the exam at a Pearson VUE test center. The day you submit your application decides which numbers apply: the BACB's 2022 requirements for applications through 31 December 2026, the 2027 requirements for applications from 1 January 2027. Below, both sets side by side, then each step in the order you will meet it.

Step 1: the degree and your pathway
Every route starts with a bachelor's degree or higher. What kind of degree it is decides your pathway, and the pathway decides whether Step 2 applies to you at all.
Pathway 1
- A bachelor's or higher from an ABAI-accredited program
- Conferred in 2015 or later, while the program held its accreditation
- No separate coursework count to document: the behavior-analytic content is part of the degree
- Fieldwork and the exam still required
Pathway 2
- A bachelor's or higher in any field, earned at any time, from a qualifying institution
- Plus behavior-analytic coursework: 225 h for applications through 31 Dec 2026, 270 h from 1 Jan 2027
- The institution needs a Pathway 2 Program Contact, who attests your coursework
- Fieldwork and the exam still required
The tellWas your degree program ABAI-accredited on the day it conferred your degree? Yes puts you on Pathway 1. Any other bachelor's puts you on Pathway 2, with the coursework step.
A psychology degree is common in the field but not required: Pathway 2 accepts a bachelor's in any field. Degrees earned outside the US go through the BACB's own equivalency evaluation, set out in the handbook. Accreditation status of a program is listed by ABAI, not by the BACB.
Step 2: behavior-analytic coursework (225 h now, 270 h from 2027)
Pathway 1 graduates skip this step. On Pathway 2, coursework is counted in hours per content area, and the areas themselves change on 1 January 2027. At the handbook's conversion of 15 hours per semester credit and 10 per quarter credit, the 225-hour sequence equals 15 semester credits.
| Content area | Hours |
|---|---|
| Ethics and professionalism | 30 |
| Philosophical underpinnings, concepts and principles | 45 |
| Measurement and experimental design | 30 |
| Behavior assessment | 45 |
| Behavior-change procedures and selecting interventions | 60 |
| Personnel supervision and management | 15 |

Can you do BCaBA coursework online?
Yes for the coursework, no for the exam. The BACB counts coursework by institution, content area and hours, so an online sequence counts when a qualifying institution delivers it and its Pathway 2 Program Contact attests it. The exam is a different matter: it is taken in person at a Pearson VUE test center or on a US military base, and there is no online or at-home sitting.
- The institution has a Pathway 2 Program Contact: since 1 January 2026 that contact submits the coursework attestation
- The sequence matches your column: 225 hours in six areas meets the 2022 rules; an application from 1 January 2027 needs the 270-hour, five-area structure
- Your earliest course will still sit inside the 10-year limit when you apply (2022 rules)
- The credit system on the transcript: semester credits at 15 hours each, quarter credits at 10
- The date of the first class meeting: it is one of the conditions for logging fieldwork, so it starts Step 3's clock
Step 3: supervised fieldwork, in brief
Fieldwork is supervised practice in behavior analysis, logged month by month under an active BCBA. You pick a type: Supervised fieldwork takes more hours with a lighter supervision share, Concentrated fewer hours with double the share.
Per the handbook, hours start counting only once three things are in place: a qualified supervisor, a signed supervision contract and your first class meeting of qualifying coursework. Under the 2022 rules all hours must fall within 5 continuous years, and in both rule sets at least 40% are unrestricted activities, the work other than direct implementation with clients. A BCaBA cannot supervise fieldwork, so the person who signs your log is a BCBA.
That is all this page needs. The monthly percentages, the contact counts and two worked months are laid out on the fieldwork and supervision hours page, for both rule sets.
Step 4: apply, then sit the exam
You apply to the BACB once the degree, any coursework and the fieldwork are complete. From there the route is a fixed sequence of five links.
Assemble the file
Transcript, the coursework attestation if you are on Pathway 2, and your fieldwork documentation. Per the current handbook, supplemental documents are due within 90 days of payment.
Apply and pay
The application fee is $175, per the BCaBA Handbook (updated June 2026). The handbook states a maximum review time, and the BACB can change it, so plan with slack rather than to a date.
Authorization opens
Approval starts a 2-year authorization: up to 8 attempts, at least 30 days apart, per the current handbook.
Book at Pearson VUE
$125 per exam appointment, per the BCaBA Handbook (updated June 2026). Test centers in the US, in Canada except Quebec and Ontario, and in Australia until 1 January 2027, plus US military bases. No online option.
Test day
Under the 6th-edition outline, per the current BCaBA Handbook: 175 questions, 150 scored and 25 unscored, 4 options each, 4 hours including the tutorial. You see pass or fail at the test center; the cut is set by a modified Angoff study and no percentage is published.
The exam does not change on 1 January 2027. Both columns sit the same test, built on the BCaBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.), formerly called the task list. Use the authorization window to work through the nine sections on the outline map and check yourself against the free 60-question practice exam; scoring, booking and test day are covered in full on the exam page.
Step 5: before you practice
A pass makes you certified, not independent. Before you see clients you need a BCBA supervisor on record; with none on record your certification is inactive, which means no practice, no billing and no supervising or training RBTs, per the handbook. Where the role sits relative to the BCBA is set out on the BCaBA overview.
- Recertify every 2 years.
- Earn 20 CEUs per 2-year cycle, 4 of them in ethics; add 3 supervision CEUs in any cycle where you supervise RBTs. This rule does not change in 2027.
- One CEU is 50 minutes of learning, so the 20 come to about 16.7 hours per cycle.
- Certain investigations and actions must be self-reported to the BACB within 30 days.
Licensure is a separate track from certification. Some US states license or regulate behavior analysts, some of them assistants too, and the handbook tells new BCaBAs in those states to contact the state board before practicing. The rules differ by state, so take them from your state board.
Coming from RBT
RBT experience is a head start on the skills, not on the paperwork. Fieldwork has its own entry conditions (a qualified BCBA supervisor, a signed supervision contract, the first class meeting of qualifying coursework), so RBT hours worked before all three were in place are not fieldwork hours. The supervision you received as an RBT generally does not stand in for fieldwork supervision either, per the handbook.
The pass changes your position in the RBT relationship. The BACB lets you hold one certification at a time: on obtaining the higher one, the lower one expires after 180 days. After the 8-hour supervision training you can supervise, train and assess RBTs, while your own work stays under a BCBA.
Weighing whether to stop at the assistant level or aim for the master's-level credential? The two are compared, with the RBT alongside, on BCaBA vs BCBA.
If you are mid-way on 31 December 2026
If you are part-way through coursework or fieldwork now, you have one decision to make before the end of 2026: finish everything and apply under the 2022 requirements by 31 December, or plan to the 2027 numbers. Nothing in between exists.
Through 31 Dec 2026
2022 requirements
225 h coursework; 1,300 h Supervised or 1,000 h Concentrated fieldwork; 20–130 h a month.
From 1 Jan 2027
2027 requirements
270 h coursework in 5 areas; 1,300 h Supervised or 800 h Concentrated; 20–160 h a month; observation counted in minutes.
Both dates
Same exam
The Test Content Outline (6th ed.) stays in force; the requirements change, the exam does not.
Count what is documented
Total your signed fieldwork hours by month and type, and your coursework hours by content area. Count only hours your supervisor has already signed off.
Test the 2026 route
Can every requirement be met and the application submitted before 1 January 2027? If one piece cannot, the 2022 column is closed to you.
Re-map to 2027
Line your coursework up against the five 2027 areas and your fieldwork against the 2027 rules. The BACB's 2027 transition guidance explains how work already done is treated; follow it, not a rule of thumb.
Keep both sets of forms
The BACB advises tracking your hours on both sets of forms during the transition, so nothing has to be rebuilt later.
How long it takes, realistically
The BACB sets minimums and caps, not a timetable, so there is no standard duration. Each step runs on its own clock: the degree, any coursework you still need, fieldwork paced by the monthly cap, then an application review and an exam inside a 2-year authorization.
Logged at the monthly cap, fieldwork alone takes at least 10 months on the Supervised route through 2026 and as little as 5 months on the 800-hour Concentrated route from 2027; the cap itself means roughly 30 fieldwork hours a week at 130 a month, or 37 at 160. All four combinations are divided out on the supervision hours page.
Coursework on Pathway 2 can run alongside fieldwork once its first class has met. That makes the order of operations the real lever: fieldwork is the slowest leg, and it cannot start until coursework has. Enroll in the first qualifying course early and the two clocks overlap instead of running end to end.

FAQ
01What are the requirements to become a BCaBA in 2026?
For applications through 31 December 2026: a bachelor's degree (from an ABAI-accredited program for Pathway 1, or any field plus 225 hours of behavior-analytic coursework for Pathway 2), then 1,300 hours of Supervised or 1,000 hours of Concentrated fieldwork, then a pass on the exam, per the BCaBA Handbook (updated June 2026).
02What are the BCaBA requirements for 2027?
From 1 January 2027 the two pathways stay, Pathway 2 coursework rises to 270 hours in five content areas, Concentrated fieldwork drops to 800 hours, Supervised stays at 1,300 and the monthly cap rises to 160 hours, per the BACB's 2027 BCaBA Requirements. The exam stays on the 6th-edition outline.
03Can I become a BCaBA online?
Partly. Coursework can be taken online from a qualifying institution with a Pathway 2 Program Contact. Fieldwork is supervised practice with clients, and the exam is in person only, at a Pearson VUE test center or a US military base.
04How do I go from RBT to BCaBA?
Hold or earn a bachelor's, complete the coursework if you are on Pathway 2, and log fieldwork under a BCBA once its start conditions are met; RBT hours from before that point are not fieldwork. Once you pass, your RBT certification expires after 180 days.
05How long does it take to become a BCaBA?
It depends on where you start. With a degree in hand, fieldwork is the long leg: logging the monthly cap, the floor is 10 months for 1,300 Supervised hours through 2026, or 5 months for 800 Concentrated hours from 1 January 2027 (the arithmetic). Add the application review and your exam date.
06What coursework is required for the BCaBA?
On Pathway 2, 225 hours across six content areas for applications through 31 December 2026 (grade C or better, within 10 years), or 270 hours in five areas from 1 January 2027. Graduates of an ABAI-accredited program on Pathway 1 do not document separate coursework.
07Do I need a degree in psychology to become a BCaBA?
No. Pathway 2 accepts a bachelor's in any field, provided you add the behavior-analytic coursework; Pathway 1 needs a degree from an ABAI-accredited program, whatever department runs it.
