The BCaBA exam, from booking to result: format, pass/fail scoring, pass rate and retakes
The BCaBA® (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst) exam is 175 multiple-choice questions in 4 hours at a Pearson VUE test center, 150 of them scored, under the 6th-edition outline per the current BCaBA Handbook (updated June 2026). You see pass or fail on screen before you leave. Below, in the order you meet them: content, scoring, cost, attempts and the result.
Two lines in that list change how you prepare. First, the 25 unscored questions are pilot items mixed in with the scored ones and not marked, so you cannot spot them and should not try. Treat all 175 as if they count. Second, the 4 hours include the tutorial and the terms screen, so the clock you work against is a little shorter than the number on the booking.

Per question240 / 175 = 1.37 min

Checkpoint 2120 min / 1.37 = question 88
Checkpoint 3180 min / 1.37 = question 131
About 82 seconds a question; slightly less once the tutorial has run
Pacing arithmetic from the handbook's time and item count, not a BACB rule. The paced run on the practice exam uses the same 82 seconds.
Memorize the three checkpoints and compare the clock with them once an hour. Five questions behind at the first one is easy to recover; finding out at question 150 is not.
02Nine sections
What is on it: nine sections
The 150 scored questions are spread over nine content areas, lettered A to I, in fixed numbers. That split comes from the BCaBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.), formerly called the task list, which lists 90 tasks and has set the exam content since 2025. Our walk through the outline breaks each section into its tasks.
Scored questions per section, BCaBA Test Content Outline (6th ed.)
Shares are the BACB's rounded figures. Counts are exact and add to 150; the 25 unscored items sit on top.
Sections G, H and C together carry 62 of the 150 scored questions, all applied work: procedures, plans and data.
Sections A and D carry 10 each. Short, but dense with terms, so a few hours of definitions pay off.
Sections E and I, ethics and supervision, add 33 questions, written from the assistant's seat: what you handle yourself and what goes to your supervising BCBA.
Study time should follow those counts. Put the most hours into G, then H and C, and keep A and D on a short weekly review instead of a long block.
03Samples
What BCaBA questions look like: three samples
Below are three trials, one each from Sections G, C and E. All three were drafted for this site, each to one task of the 6th-edition outline. The BACB keeps its exam items confidential, so no prep site can show you the questions on your form. The three test generalization (task G.17), choosing a measurement system (C.7) and a request that runs into consent and confidentiality (E.5).

Stimulus generalization occurs when a response occurs in the presence of stimuli that differ from the training stimulus. By practicing the skill across different settings and people, the analyst is promoting stimulus generalization across these contextual variables.
AResponse generalization is new forms of a response.
BCorrect: training across places and people promotes stimulus generalization.
CSpontaneous recovery is the return of an extinguished behavior.
DMaintenance is persistence over time, not across settings and people.

Pick an option: the verdict, the reasoning and a note on all four options open here.
Momentary time sampling is efficient for behaviors that occur at high rates throughout the day because it only requires observation at specific moments rather than continuous monitoring. While it provides an estimate rather than an exact count, it is practical for high-rate behaviors when resources are limited.
ALatency measures time from a cue to the response, which is not the question.
BCounting every instance of very high-rate behavior all day is impractical.
CTiming every episode all day is demanding when episodes are frequent.
DCorrect: momentary time sampling estimates high-rate, ongoing behavior with far less observer effort.

Pick an option: the verdict, the reasoning and a note on all four options open here.
The BCaBA should explain that informed consent from parents/guardians is required before conducting behavioral assessments, regardless of the setting, to comply with ethical standards.
AA limited assessment still needs consent.
BReferring elsewhere avoids the consent issue rather than addressing it.
CCorrect: explain that informed consent from the parent or guardian is required before assessment.
DAn administrator's request does not replace consent.

Laid out the way a failing BACB score report lists your percentage per content area. A practice percentage is not a pass prediction: the BACB publishes no passing percentage.
Answer before you open the explanation, then read the note under every option, not only the key. Most stems describe a short scene and ask for the MOST appropriate step: two options are often defensible, and only one fits the stem's facts. For exam-length work, the 60-question practice exam mixes all nine sections in outline proportion and has a timed mode.
04Scoring
How the BCaBA exam is scored
The BCaBA exam is pass/fail, and the BACB publishes no passing percentage and no raw number of correct answers. The result is based on your overall performance across the 150 scored questions, not section by section, and every scored question weighs the same, per the BACB's examination information.
Modified Angoff
The method that sets the cut score. BACB-certified subject-matter experts, sitting as a panel, judge each question by how a minimally qualified candidate would do on it, and the Board approves the resulting standard.
Criterion-referenced
You are measured against that standard, not against the people who tested the same week. There is no curve.
Equated forms
Different candidates get different forms. The forms are adjusted statistically to be equally hard, so the raw number needed can differ from form to form. That is one reason no single figure is published.
A passing candidate gets a pass notice and nothing more. A failing candidate gets a report showing the percentage correct in each content area. That report is the most useful document you will have if you need a second attempt, as the last section of this page explains.
60% of first-time candidates passed the BCaBA exam in 2025, per the BACB's 2025 pass-rate data. 2025 was the first year of testing on the 6th-edition outline, so it is also the only year of results on the current content.
The figure averages everyone who sat for the first time that year; it says nothing about one person's chances. Your own practice record says more: how many sections still sit low, and whether you hold an 82-second pace through a long set.
06Difficulty
Is the BCaBA exam hard?
Yes, mostly because of how the questions are built rather than how much there is to learn. Few items ask for a definition on its own. Most give you a client, a setting and a data pattern, then ask what the procedure is, what went wrong or what to do next. Four patterns account for most of the misses:
Applied scenarios. The stem names no procedure; you have to recognize it from what the analyst did.
Look-alike procedures. DRA, DRI and DRO, or stimulus versus response prompts, differ in one detail, and the wrong options are built on that detail.
Measurement logic. Section C asks which recording method fits a behavior and which way an estimate is biased, and it often needs a quick calculation.
The assistant's role. Ethics and supervision questions turn on what a BCaBA may decide alone and when to seek the supervising BCBA's guidance.
Partial-interval recording
The interval is scored if the behavior occurs at any moment in it.
Tends to overestimate how much the behavior occurs.
Whole-interval recording
The interval is scored only if the behavior lasts the entire interval.
Tends to underestimate it.
The tellAsk what one brief occurrence does to the score. If it marks the whole interval, it is partial-interval, and the estimate runs high.
The other difficulty is length. Four hours of scenarios wears down accuracy in the last hour, so sit at least one long timed set before test day to find your own fatigue point; the usual stall is not missing knowledge but lost attention, often in the last hour. Weighing the next credential up as well? BCaBA vs BCBA sets the two exams and roles side by side.
07Booking
Booking, fees and attempts
You do not book the exam first. You apply for certification through your BACB account, and the exam opens to you only once the application is approved. What the application needs (degree, coursework and supervised fieldwork) depends on whether you apply by 31 December 2026 or from 1 January 2027; how to become a BCaBA lays out both rule sets.
Step 1
Application submitted
Certification application and documents through your BACB account; the fee is paid at this point.
Approval day
Authorization opens
The 2-year authorization starts on the day the application is approved, per the handbook.
Your choice of date
Appointment booked
You schedule with Pearson VUE at a test center or US military base; the exam is available year-round.
Within 2 years
Up to 8 attempts
At least 30 days between attempts. After 8 unsuccessful attempts you wait until the 2-year window ends, then apply again.
Test centers are in the United States, in Canada except Quebec and Ontario, and in Australia until 1 January 2027, per the BCaBA Handbook (updated June 2026). There is no online or at-home version of the BCaBA exam.

Eligible veterans can be reimbursed for BACB exam fees under the GI Bill, pass or fail, per the same handbook. On the window: 8 attempts with 30-day gaps fit easily inside 2 years, so the limit that bites is the clock, not the count. Book early enough that a second attempt, if needed, still lands inside it with a month of study before it.
08Test day
On test day
1
One week out
Confirm the appointment, the center's address and your route. Reread the testing rules in the handbook: the ID you must bring and what may come into the room.
2
The day before
No new material. One short mixed set to stay warm, then stop. Lay out your ID and the appointment confirmation.
3
Arrival
Plan to be early. Per the handbook, a candidate more than 30 minutes late is turned away and loses the appointment fee.
4
Check-in
Pearson VUE checks your identification before you are seated.
5
Tutorial and terms
These run on the exam clock, inside the 4 hours. Read them once, then move on.
6
175 questions
Work to your checkpoints: about question 44 at one hour, 88 at two, 131 at three.
7
Result
Pass or fail appears at the test center when you finish.
Exam content is confidential, and the terms you accept forbid sharing questions afterward. If something in the room affects your exam, such as noise or a system failure, report it on the day. The handbook allows an appeal about testing conditions within 7 days; the questions, answer keys and results themselves cannot be appealed.
09Result
After your result
If you passed
Passing makes you certified, but you may practice only under a BCBA's supervision. With no supervisor on record, the certification is inactive: no services, no billing, no supervising or training RBTs. The required amount changes with the 2027 rules, as the note below shows, and the supervision hours page works through the arithmetic. If you hold the RBT, it expires 180 days after you become a BCaBA, per the handbook, since the BACB allows one certification at a time.
If you did not pass
Start with the score report. It shows the percentage correct per content area; weigh each shortfall by that section's question count, since a weak Section G (22 scored questions) costs more than an equally weak Section A (10). With at least 30 days before the next attempt, spend the first week on the two sections with the largest shortfall, rebuild them with untimed sets, and finish with one paced run at 82 seconds a question.
175: 150 scored and 25 unscored pilot items, mixed together and not marked, with four options each, under the 6th-edition outline per the current BCaBA Handbook. You have 4 hours, including the tutorial.
02What score do I need to pass the BCaBA exam?
The BACB does not publish one. The result is pass/fail, the cut score is set by a modified Angoff study, and equated forms mean the raw number can vary by form. Aim for no weak sections on your practice record.
03What is the BCaBA pass rate?
60% of first-time candidates passed in 2025, per the BACB's 2025 pass-rate data. 2025 was the first year on the 6th-edition outline.
04How difficult is the BCaBA exam?
Most questions are short applied scenarios with two plausible options, and there are 175 of them in 4 hours. Telling look-alike procedures apart and keeping an 82-second pace are the two skills to practice.
05Can I take the BCaBA exam at home?
No. The exam is given in person only, at Pearson VUE test centers and US military bases; there is no online or remotely proctored option.
06How much does the BCaBA exam cost?
Per the BCaBA Handbook (updated June 2026), the certification application is $175 and each Pearson VUE exam appointment is $125. Rescheduling or canceling inside 30 days of the appointment adds a fee.
07How many times can you take the BCaBA exam?
Up to 8 times within the 2-year authorization that starts when your application is approved, with at least 30 days between attempts. After that, you wait for the window to close and apply again.
